Canada Visa

Canada Visa Application

You may visit Canada as a tourist, student or temporary foreign worker. Every year over 5 million people visit Canada to take advantage of many opportunities available here.

Depending on your country of origin and the reason for your visit, you will need to meet specific requirements in order to enter Canada and get Canada visa. In some cases, if you plan to stay in the country for a certain period of time, you will need to apply for a Temporary Resident Canada Visa by sending Canada visa application.

Temporary Resident Visas are divided into several categories. They are as follows:

In order to visit Canada, you must meet the following conditions:
Hold a valid travel document (for example, passport)
Be in good health
Demonstrate to an immigration officer that you have strong ties to your country of origin (financial, professional, home and family)
Demonstrate to an immigration officer that you will leave Canada before the expiration of your Canada visa
Have sufficient funds for your trip to Canada. The amount of money you need to have available depends on the circumstances of your visit, such as length of stay, place of stay (hotel, friend's or relative's house). You may contact a Canadian visa office in your area for more information.
Possible additional requirements:
A Temporary Resident visa, depending on your country of citizenship
A medical examination
A letter of invitation from a citizen or permanent resident of Canada

Check the guide in your application package for instructions.

  • Using a representative
You do not need a representative to help you apply to visit or immigrate to Canada. Whether you use a representative is a personal choice.
  • Processing time

How long it takes to process your application varies depending on the visa office where you applied.

  • An interview with a visa officer

You may need to go for an interview with a visa officer. See more information about an interview in After Applying on the right-hand side of this page.

  • A medical examination

You might need a medical examination to be allowed to enter Canada. If you do, a Canadian immigration officer will tell you and will send you instructions about what to do. A medical examination can add more than three months to the processing time of your application.

Transport companies (for example, airlines) must make sure that you have the necessary travel documents for entrance to Canada. If you do not have the proper documents, the companies may delay or even refuse boarding.

Depending on your country of citizenship, you may or may not require a Temporary Resident Canada visa to visit Canada. Even if persons with your citizenship do not need a visa to enter Canada, there is important information you must consider before planning the trip.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, meaning that they are not allowed to enter the country. Reasons for inadmissibility include participation in criminal activity, in violations of human rights or in organized crime. Other grounds for inadmissibility include such factors as security grounds, financial reasons or health concerns.

You may not be permitted to enter Canada if you have committed or have been convicted of a crime.
Both minor crimes and serious offenses may be grounds for inadmissibility. Examples of criminal offenses are impaired driving, assault, theft, manslaughter, etc. The Criminal Code of Canada lists all criminal offenses.
If you were convicted of a criminal offence before you turned 18, you may be allowed to enter Canada.
