Live-in Caregiver

Live-In Caregiver Package

The Live-in Caregiver program is intended to attract foreigners with adequate experience in caring for children or the elderly.

Live-in Caregivers must reside in their employer's home. Although the status of a Live-in Caregiver does not allow one to permanently remain in Canada, the applicant can, after two years of full-time employment, apply for Permanent Residence.

One of the most important requirements of the Live-in Caregiver Program is sufficient knowledge of English/French; the applicant must be able to communicate with the Canadian family that employs him/her. It is important to be proficient enough in the language to be able to contact the emergency services, if such need arises and read labels on medications. If you have work experience or education in the medical field, child care, teaching or elderly care, you will have no problems answering demands of a Canadian family. According to Canadian immigration law, the minimum necessary requirements are as follows:

  • · An official job offer from a Canadian employer
  • · A written contract with the future employer
  • · Successful completion of secondary school (must be equivalent to a secondary school diploma in Canada)
  • · Minimum 6 months of training or 1 year of full-time work experience in mentioned fields during the past 3 years
  • · Proficiency in English or French

In order to apply for a visa under the Live-in Caregiver Program, you need to submit an application to a Canadian visa office responsible for your area. If your application is successful, you will receive a work permit.
