Support Refugees
The Government of Canada and the Anglican dioceses across the country hope to welcome up to 50 refugee families over the next two years through a project, which was announced today by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney and Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada.
"Canada has a proud tradition of opening the doors to people from all over the world and ensuring a safe zone for those who want protection," said Kenney. "Private donors, such as the Anglican Church, represent a substantial and diverse group of volunteers from all over Canada. Since 1978, private donors have brought more than 200 000 refugees in Canada, which is much greater than the number of refugees resettled via Budgetary financing. "
Anglican diocese that has an agreement with the Government hope to welcome up to 50 refugee families. Families will be selected by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and submitted to Canada for resettlement. This initiative is part of celebrating the 50 nth anniversary of The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund's (PWRDF), which began in October and will continue for 20 months.
The project sponsors 50 refugee families - and that is an exciting component of the 50th PWRDF annual program, "said Archbishop Hiltz. "Providing support for Refugees is an opportunity to welcome the stranger, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. In many cases, the family struggles to survive in refugee camps for many years, even decades. Our support for refugees' sponsorship represents renewed hope for a free life, dignity, and peace. "
